Hi Tim, Bob, Mike (and other members who participated in this
discussion)
After our discussion I wanted to do a recreation with changes to the
original.Then this commission came.Inquiring about John Buscema/Tony
Dezuniga's Doc Savage #1 Splash for a commission (From the black &
white Marvel magazine version of Doc Savage from the 1970's)
Dave said "…this image was always my favorite interpretation of the
Doc Savage character in comics."
I told him to check the messages on our discussion of "Ethics of
Recreations" here and let me know what does he think about
recreations. In our discussion it was agreed that exact recreations
done for oneself is ethically acceptable. A recreation with changes
from the original is also ethical even if it is commissioned.
Dave replied that "I had no idea this was such an ethical quandary.
….. I just always liked the Buscema take on the Doc Savage crew, and
I don't need a slavish reproduction, just something in "the spirit"
of the 1970's Buscema."
That was acceptable enough for me.
I recreated John Buscema/Tony Dezuniga's Doc Savage #1 Splash.
Tony Dezuniga is my favorite inker over my favorite penciler John
Buscema. It is sheer coincidence that I received this as my first
commission.
I did not intentionally try to change the style.. But I purposely
changed the composition. Though I moved the figures, and moved the
text a lot it still may look like the original. But if you compare
with the original it is very clear that it is not a line for line
recreation.What do you think of these...

Dave says..." I see artists doing recreations or "One Minute later"
all the time, again, it's the iconic image that matters, not the
need to own a "copy" of a particular page.. whether you call it an
homage or say "After" it's a celebration of the original image, not
an attempt to pass it off as that image."

Without any acadamic knowledge in art, being a science student in high school, groping in the dark as a comic book artist I learnt so much from the 10-15 Conan comics I had and I learnt by recreating his work..Later I learnt more with John Buscema's 'How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way". To me he is the best artist in comics if not the best comic book artist.

This may provoke a flame war, but is anyone else not terribly impressed by RC's dad? I hope he stays on it a while though, the article says he has a 2-year commitment to SUPERMAN. I have been noticing a didsturbing trend in comics for one creative team to start a book, and not even last a year [ Waid on both FLASH and the Waid / Pereze BRAVE & BOLD to name 2 esamples ]

Speaking of other notable writers AND B & B, J Michael Stracyznkis is taking over that book from Waid, his first announced DC project.

No, it was Deadshot and I would think someone of that caliber (like
Slade) would have arsenals full of armor piercing bullets and extremely
high powered guns. And to loosely quote Kevin Costner's Robin
Hood, "Even this boy can be taught to find the chinks in every suit of

I loved JSA too, I had to give up the title around #50-60 when I got married,
as that is when the Mrs. could not accept my spending habits on comic books
at all.
Now she gives me leeway a bit.
Since james Robinson is really a big-shot at DC now, maybe we will see him
tie in STARMAN with his current SUPERMAN and other works.
