[SoCalBrowncoats] CABC Exclusive Serenity Better Days #1 at Comic-Con

Copied from SerenityStuff.com:

http://tinyurl.com/5wxfhv

"Dark Horse Comics is really cool. They are unbelievably cool. They
are, in fact, so unbelievably cool that they've joined forces with the
California Browncoats to make a variant Serenity comic to sell at the
San Diego Comic-Con, just to benefit Kids Need to Read.

Which is pretty cool, you gotta admit.

The California Browncoats will be selling the comics at SDCC. It will
be a variant edition of "Serenity: Better Days #1″ with the Will
Conrad wraparound cover art they used for their special DH 100
version, only this will display Will's pencils instead. 32 pages, all
the stuff from the first one, but with a cardstock cover for extra
specialness. They'll be $10 each, only 5,000 will ever be available,
and 100% of the proceeds (roughly 8 bucks per book) will be donated to
Kids Need to Read, the children's literacy program founded by Nathan
Fillion and author PJ Haarsma.

These will only be available at Comic-Con 2008, but even if you can't
go the California Browncoats are there for you. Specifically, on eBay,
where on all five days of the con they'll be selling copies of the
DH-California Browncoats SDCC edition of Serenity. Again, all proceeds
will go to Kids Need to Read. Bookmark their eBay page and be ready
(I'll give you a heads up when it gets close).

Major thanks to Dark Horse and to the Cali Browncoats sponsors Gabriel
Stempinski, Margaret Weis Productions, Creation Entertainment,
Poplollies.com, The Powers Team - Marsia and Eugene, Dwight Bragdon,
Done The Impossible , SaveHiatus.com and Quantum Mechanix, who helped
make this possible.

This is a great collectible and a great cause (funny how so many
Whedon-based projects combine the two). Check out the California
Browncoats site for more details."

http://www.californiabrowncoats.org/

We have a lot more exciting news coming for Comic-Con 2008!

James
PS. Yes indeed, you do see our very own locals, Marsia & Eugene and
Dwight as some of the sponsors. :)

Thanks for such a generous offer. We'll do what we can to get it
there. Might have to park it close by at a public parking lot.

There isn't a need to chip in for gas or rent a vehicle (AARG has an
expense account for that). The backup plan is my dad's truck, but I'm
not sure he would let anyone else drive it besides me. And I will be
too busy with the screenings themselves all 3 days to handle the
driving. Let's wait and see on the shopping center or alternate
location. And then let's see if anyone offers a vehicle and/or to drive.

Dangit, I might just make my parents come on out and have them see
just what it is I do with my spare time. Then we'll have a driver and
a truck. :)

At the least, we need to set up a shindig in the late summer/early
fall that we can bring the ambulance and put it on display. We can
also make it a work day and get the ambulance cleaned up more. Maybe
make it part of our Serenity 3rd Anniversary celebration in September.
It's likely it will be on display at the Creation convention in
November, and we want it looking good for that.

Re: [Worlds_Of_Fantasy] Re: Organizing Research Material

We're not all that different in our approaches it seems. My fiction starts from an outline... which is usually written on an evvelope most of the time... that being the nearest paper when the flow starts and the ideas need recording. I have a 180,000 word book that was done that way.

However when I did my art books and my one now on starting a business, the outlines have been chapter heads and then I research the chapter and detail the process. Now for my new one I am looking at at least 40 chapters to cover all bases. Each chapter is a dozen illustrations/pictures, along with a few hundred words. Then I go back and simplify until it is as easy to understand as I can make it. The outlines become monsters. None of it is theory, so I illustrate from life and that means contacting companies and the competitors so no one company has an advantage as much as possible. That takes time.

I never have been a gamer as it just never appealed to me. I was in the military and believe me, if there is a place where planning does not work... that is it. Some doofus doping off will screw up the best plan going. Some need to goof off drives men and there goes all the preparations. Been there and seen it in reality. Don't want to play it. Its not a game to me. I've been in Germany where those fights took place and met people who were in them. I can understand getting into a game... I just can't. I guess knowing what I do ruins it for me.

Oh, for fiction no - I usually go with just an outline and then I keep making successive passes to flesh out the "fish" so to speak. Each time I read it I'll say "hmmm" and I'll edit a little or add a little to make the story "better". Eventually I'll get to a point where I need to stop with the updates and thus I'll have my book.

If I do research projects, etc. then it can get into this organized way. It's a carry over from my organization skills when I worked in a law office. I used to be good at putting together motions, etc. and some of the cases had things like cut out pieces of seat belt etc. So the challenge is how to catalog everything and still hand out copies of stuff to all parties concerned (the seat belt I took a picture of ((hi res)) and put color glossies 11x8 as a tabbed item. I thought about scanning it 3D and providing it on disk but figured that was getting a little crazy...).

When I research battles for my war gaming - then *that* can get pretty detailed. I'll have all sorts of different sources (books, web, print outs, scribbled notes, maps, etc.) and I have to keep it all straight so I can make scenarios out of them. Even then I can just "wing it" if I need to. For example, we do a Big Game and this year it's in Shepherdstown, WV near Antietam, MD. The theme is the Battle of the Bulge and Kampfgroupe Pieper. We're trying to do the fighting around Stoumont for 19 to 20 Dec 1944. But if our detailed research plans fall on their face then we'll just do a generic Dec of '44 battle. It's great - 1/72 scale tanks and infantry spread out over a field at leasst 6 x 18 feet in dimension.

Uh, sorry.... you can see where and why I get carried away! *grin*

Cheers & Good Luck

WOW Gabe, That is super organized. I did something similar on my How-To books only with actual paper, pictures and all. I wrote on the folders what was in each file and why (That's important because you WILL forget)...
Like I said, that was for text books, but is that what you do for fiction too? It seems a trifle too organized and stiff for a fastpaced story. Not that I am criticizing... Just curious. If it works for you then it is terific. I do have a project on "Getting into business with no money" that has a careful step-by-step plan to be followed. Your way would work well so I shall use something much like you described... Thanks
Spider

---- Gabriel Landowski <gabriel_landowski@yahoo.com> wrote:

=============

I do an outline of the story and number the sections & subsections.

As I find research material I save it to my computer in a sub-folder
numbers the same as the sections in my outline. This way I have a
correlation between my outline and my research material and i know why
i saved that bit of info.

If I get enough material in a sub-folder then I'll put a _notes.txt
file in there and tell myself what I put in there and why.

If I start from the other end and collect research material, I just
keep a note file or paper and create a table of contents for the
folders whether in the computer or in the real world (or both).

In the end I have a list that tells me everything I have collected and
where I can find it.

Hi Mark. Thanks for your interest in the book. I definitely agree with
your statement about Everett. It would have been frightening to think of
how well he'd be regarded today if he had worked for EC instead of
Marvel in the 1950s. I'd put him up against anyone for his horror work,
and the scary part of Everett's genius is that his last work - the
Sub-Mariner issues in the #50s in 1972/73 - was amongst his best.

Thanks,

Shannyn!!

Dedication: For Robin! This is my strange answer to your hug a cat day challenge. Hope you likey!

This is the purrrrfect answer to the challenge! I love it! So romantic. @>----
I loved that episode of JLA, and this is a perfect follow-up. :-)

Hugging her up close, Batman kissed her head softly, gently stroking the long ebony silk fur that embodied her. She purred and licked his face

Batman...he has a flavr. (Why yes, I have been spending too much time with LOLCats *VBG*)

and suddenly weighed a hell of a lot more than she had only seconds before.

A little advice to Bruce - don't mention this out loud, or you'll be in deep trouble. lol

Batman didnt comment but he made no effort to put her down either. Holding her closer he drew her into a slow deep kiss. A wet one that had nothing to do with the rain falling down.

*grins* Bruce is such a romantic at heart.

Thanks for taking up the challenge Shannyn. This was delightful. :-)

The hitch on my dads truck says class 3 on the sticker on the bottom.
It needs to be rated for 500 Lbs tongue weight, which is what class 3
is supposed to be.

from the AA website: "volunteer driver(s) with a 1/2+ton vehicle
(truck, SUV, suburban,... ) with class-III hitch (rated for 500lbs
tonuge weight) to tow the ambulance, and gas money (about $.30/mile)--
any help would be greatly appreciated! "

At this point, our backup plan (me) is very unlikely, so if you have
the right truck, and no one else can do it, we may very well take you
up on the offer. Also, if you are comfortable having an experienced
driver do the driving with you in the truck, it may be easier to do
that than find another vehicle.

This is all dependent on even being able to display the AA at all of
course, since the shopping center seems to have a lot of rules and
insurance requirements we may not be able to meet.

Anyone else either have a truck or can be a driver?

Maria, you've got the job if the ambulance is there. :)

Thanks!
James

Re: BLUDHAVEN FIC: If You Fall 13/?

BRAVISIMO. Author Author Author. LOVE it. I can understand how Tim is feeling but I think he really should be trying to give Bruce the benefit of a doubt. I love the way you are doing Jim Gordon. Oh no, looks like a mini showdown of Tim and Bruce with Dick caught in the middle. Dr, Curtis, better keep your nose out of it lol. Better job security that way. Aw trying to make him leave. Dick needs his father figure.

Leslie stopped the car at a side entrance to Wayne Memorial. She
knew this was the only way Bruce would agree for her to take Dick to
the hospital. They had taken off the Nightwing suit and had worked
together to come up with a cover story. She knew Dr. Katie Curtis
wouldn't ask questions.

Katie and an orderly hurried up to them with a wheelchair and with
Bruce's help they were able to get Dick into the wheelchair.

"We have an emergency room ready." Katie said as they hurried
inside. "There will be no one but medical staff here as you
requested Mr. Wayne." Katie said turning to Bruce who was holding
Dick's hand as they moved him to a gurney.

One of the nurses, Margie Young, who had come up, let out a curse
under her breath when she got a look at Dick. She supposed being an
ER nurse in Gotham City she should be used to this kind of thing but
somehow she was still surprised.

"What happened?" Katie asked as she started taking off Dick's shirt
to examine it.

"He was mugged." Bruce answered. "He called me from a payphone."

Katie looked at him but remembered what Leslie said about keeping
things quiet. She didn't want to ask the obvious questions because
she had a seriously injured patient in front of her. Questions
would come later.

"Okay Mr. Wayne I need you to leave the room while I examine your
son."

Bruce didn't move.

"I assure you we will do everything we can for him but we need the
room to move around."

"I'm not leaving."

Katie looked at Leslie who nodded.

"Okay then scrub up and stay out of the way."

(((

Tim stood on the roof of Central with Commissioner Gordon.

"What happened tonight Robin?" He asked.

"Nightwing was captured by Two Face and taken to a warehouse. I
followed them and found him with his face all cut up. We went
through some kind of Fun House that ended with me sliding to the
ground and Nightwing was shot twice."

"What about Matches?"

"He was with Two Face most of the time." Tim had to make a decision
of what to say. Gordon knew who Matches was so he supposed he could
say a lot. "He allowed Two Face to shoot Nightwing." He said
looking away. "Then you all burst in and he took Nightwing with
him."

Gordon shook his head having suspected that but it still sounded
wrong. Batman wouldn't stand by and let someone get shot. He knew
Batman's opinions on guns and couldn't understand why he had held a
gun to Nightwing's head.

"Does he have amnesia again?"

"No."

Gordon stood there thoughtfully for a moment. "I have an APB out
for Matches. We will find him."

"I know." Tim said and then took out his jumpline and left.

Gordon remained on the roof worried about all of their state of
minds.

Re: [Worlds_Of_Fantasy] Re: Organizing Research Material

Thanks

Spider

BLUDHAVEN June 6th - Yo-Yo Day

Yo-Yo Day

Yo-Yo day is here...hooray! Not that you need an excuse to play with your Yo-Yo. Wherever you are today, get out your Yo-Yo and impress your friends, family, and co-workers with your Yo-Yo skills. And, do it at work today! If you don't think it's appropriate at work, consider the fact that three U.S. presidents (Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon) showed off their Yo-Yo expertise while in office!

It's origin is hard to factually prove. Many believe that the Yo-Yo originated in China as early as 500-1000 B.C. However, their is some evidence that it was first used in Greece even before this time. Over the centuries the Yo-Yo has had it's ups and downs (tee, hee).

The Yo-Yo was made wildly popular in America by businessman Donald F. Duncan Sr. He manufactured the "Duncan Yo-Yo" in the early 1900's.

Celebrate the Yo-Yo today by "walking the dog" or "shooting the moon", the most popular Yo-Yo tricks.

Origin of Yo-Yo Day:

National Yo-Yo Day was established as June 6th in honor of the birthday of Donald F. Duncan Sr.

While June 6th is recognized as Yo-Yo day, there is some unsubstantiated reference to June 10th.

Yo-Yo Trivia

The worlds largest Yo-Yo weighs 256 pounds, and is on display at the National Yo-Yo museum.

In 1992, Jeffrey Hoffman took a Yo-Yo into space aboard the shuttle Atlantis.

http://www.holidayinsights.com/other/yoyoday.htm

Challenge: Take the Yo-Yo as your prompt. Write a drabble featuring your favorite DCU character(s). >:-}

Can you picture the Bat brothers competing to see who's the best with a yo-yo?
Or one or more of them trying to teach Damien to yo-yo?
Do the Arrows have a yo-yo arrow?
Do they yo-yo in Atlantis or on Paradise Island?
I'll bet Clark learned to yo-yo back in his Smallville days.

No time limit or restrictions on length, ratings, pairings, or anything else I can think of, but do be sure to include the headers as requested in the Posting Rules (msg # 84387).

Have fun!

[SoCalBrowncoats] Re: Can't Stop The Serenity is TWO WEEKS AWAY!

Very happy to hear you can make it Michelle!

Yes, indeed, all tickets and merchandise will be at the screening. We
will have a will call table, either inside the lobby or on the
sidewalk outside.

Also, if there is a line (and we're Browncoats, of course there will
be a line!) we will have volunteers bringing the tickets to you to
make it easy.

They will also be taking donations for the prize drawing and selling
some of the other merchandise. But you can always just come up to the
table for any of this.

I added a FAQ to the site recently that should hopefully answer these
and other questions.

[SoCalBrowncoats] Re: Ariel Ambulance at the OC CSTS screening?

The hitch on my dads truck says class 3 on the sticker on the bottom.
It needs to be rated for 500 Lbs tongue weight, which is what class 3
is supposed to be.

from the AA website: "volunteer driver(s) with a 1/2+ton vehicle
(truck, SUV, suburban,...) with class-III hitch (rated for 500lbs
tonuge weight) to tow the ambulance, and gas money (about $.30/mile)--
any help would be greatly appreciated!"

Thanks!
James

[SoCalBrowncoats] Re: Can't Stop The Serenity is TWO WEEKS AWAY!

I thought I would be recovering from surgery so would not be able to
attend. Instead, my doctor got me in for surgery a month ahead of
time, so I am now perfect to go to CSTS. With that in mind, I just
purchased my ticket online. My question is, do I pick up my ticket at
Will CAll at the screening, or is there supposed to be something for
me to print out?

I apologize if this has been mentioned previously, but I didn't see
anything and after the transaction there was no indication.

Thanks,

Michelle

I am also really excited to see you on Uncanny. Can not wait to see
some of the initial pages as we get closer to release. I was
wondering if you could explain a little how art will be divided with
you and Land. Your sytles are very different and will the division be
by book, story arc, or something else?

[comicart-l] One of the Best, Forgotten Canadian Cartoonists on CAF

Hi All,

I just posted a piece by Jimmy Frise, who was an excellent cartoonist
in his day, but appears to be fairly well forgotten today. His style
shares something with HT Webster, Clare Briggs, and John McCutcheon,
which is pretty durn good company. Fries, unfortunately, passed away
at a fairly young age, which may be one of the reasons why he is not
better known: http://qurls.com?i=34359

Enjoy.

[SoCalBrowncoats] Gotta love higher learning

Anyone see this yet? I would go in a heartbeat if I lived in Little
Rock.
Therese

By JON GAMBRELL, Associated Press Writer

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Aristotle. Nietzsche. Buffy?

The blond heroine of the campy television series "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer," as well as other works by creator Joss Whedon, will be the
focus of a three-day academic conference beginning Friday at
Henderson State University. The show starring Sarah Michelle Gellar
won cult fame and critical praise during its seven seasons on The WB
and UPN networks.

Since it ended, the series has spawned enough academic books on the
philosophy surrounding the roles of friendship and feminism to fill
a 15-foot-wide bookshelf at the college in Arkadelphia, said Kevin
Durand, an associate professor of philosophy.

"It has staying power," Durand said. "It's like I tell my students
in philosophy a lot of times: We're not so much about necessarily
finding all the answers as wanting to ask better questions. `Buffy,'
I think, does that. `Buffy' never really leaves you with nice, pat
answers. You have even more questions than when you started."

Durand said more than 90 academic papers will be discussed at the
conference. He expects about 150 people to attend and discuss the
vampire slayer and Whedon's other works, including the television
series "Firefly" and "Angel." Another point of discussion will be a
lesser-known part of Whedon's work — his screenplay for the hit
animated film "Toy Story."

Among the papers: "Buffy and Feminism," "Buffy and
Identity," "Gender Stereotypes and the Image of Domesticity in
`Firefly,'" "`Firefly:' The Illusive Safety of Big Damn Heroes" and
a Durand favorite by a British scholar, "Hero's Journey, Heroine's
Return: Buffy, Eurydice and the Orpheus Myth."

"That one just sounds cool," he said.

Durand, who contributed an academic paper at each of the two
previous Buffy conferences, often focuses on how power plays into
the "Buffy" series. He said much of the heroine's strength came from
others and her willingness to work with friends in her fight against
creatures of the night.
